Using structure and language to clarify processes for valid registration of legal interests

The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is an official government register that operates as an online public noticeboard of security interests in motor vehicles and other personal property.

Procedures for registering security interests can be extremely complex, with strong legal elements that need to be maintained.

Users need clear pathways for registering their interests correctly. They also need to be able to perform searches in the correct way. Incorrect registration and searching could leave the user legally unprotected.

Between February and June 2020 Apricot Zebra redrafted and restructured the information pages of the PPSR as part of a broader redevelopment of the website.

What we did

Refocused and streamlined the instructional elements from a usability standpoint

Redrafted the information pages into plain English

Located duplication and removed it, consolidating and focusing the material

Resolved issues of conflict

Reorganised the material so that it flowed more intuitively

Copyedited the material in line with the Australian Government Style Manual and proofread it before publication in a web-based format
